How did the UX Census (RVA) Survey come about?

Like many of UX professionals I didn’t start out in the UX field. When trying to get started in UX, there were some good resources online, but they didn't tell me anything about how UX was actually practiced in the Richmond, VA area. Where the skill sets and job titles the same? What salary could I expect? What tools did I need to know? Lots of questions….

I began to learn some through networking and attending local events, there was still more to know to make the path to UX clearer.

Several years ago, I stumbled across the UXPA international’s Salary Survey and I thought it would be great to do something similar in Richmond, maybe expand it and ask a wider array of questions. This idea stayed in the back of my mind.

Then, spurred on by the World IA Day -Richmond event held in February 2019 where there were so many interesting discussions and questions to be answered, I knew it was time and began drafting what would become the UX Census (RVA) survey. I had great help getting the inaugural survey launched from Milgo Yonis, Jenny Schmit, Lena Rankin, Katie Moriarty, and Richmond Design Group (Ladies That UX, Richmond UX, RVA Content Strategy). The response to the inaugural survey was amazing.

Then, came the COVID-19 Pandemic

Even with challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, social unrest, and more, we launched the survey. Thanks for your trust each year sharing your information so we could all collectively benefit. We appreciate you.
